The cold ghost of Pengersick

A former scretary of the Ghost Club describes the errie encounter he had at an overnight vigil in a Cornish castle.

On the night of the 4th and 5th of April 1997 I was taking part in an investigation into the paranormal activities at Pengersick Castle, Praa Sands, near Penzance in Cornwall. The team consisted of ten members, eight men and two women.

Just before midnight the whole team assembled in what is known as the haunted bedroom and positioned themselves so that they could all see as much of the room as possible. At about one minute past midnight the light was switched off by one of the team members and everyone in the room just stayed where they were, observing the room. There was a certain amount of moonlight shining through the window. One of the female team members was sitting in a chair near the window.

After the light had been out for about three or four minutes I observed by the side of the member who was sitting by the window a white misty shape appearing; it seemed to get quite dense, it was roughly the shape of a person and it was standing by the right hand shoulder of the lady, Mrs Don, who was sitting by the window. Although there was moonlight shining in, it certainly could not account for what I saw. The figure seemed to be swaying from side to side as if it was shifting its weight from one foot to another. This went on for about 15 minutes or so until the light was switched on again.

After a few minutes, the light was switched off again and I saw materializing a white figure standing to the left hand side of the bed (as I faced it end on). This figure was the shape of a human being; it was white and it seemed waxing and waning, varying from being fairly faint to very bright and extremely visible. It seemed to be a female form about 5ft 6ins tall or thereabouts and it was a creamy white in colour; it had a straight dress, although at one particular point it seemed to have a full skirt that was much wider than the body and a slim waist; this only lasted a short time and returned to the straight dress. I must mention that during this second session of the light being out no one was sitting on the chair by the window.

The figure started to walk towards me and I was standing in the opposite corner to the chair that was by the window. I called out that something was walking towards me, the figure carried on walking, I then said again that it was walking towards me. As soon as I said that the second time, it went back to where it was before. It did not turn round; it just seemed to walk backwards.

I then walked over towards the figure but when I got close to it I had to return as it was extremely cold; just like walking into an industrial cold store. The light was then switched on. I don’t know what it was that I saw but I am certain that it was not of this world.
