Previously unrecorded Lincolnshire ghosts

Many thanks to Uncanny UK reader Marian (full name and address supplied) for letting us know about this, as far as we know, previously unrecorded haunted house in a small town in north Lincolnshire. Naturally, we can’t give precise details of the location because the house is rented accommodation and the landlord probably wouldn’t be too happy with us identifying it as haunted – especially since, according to Marian, no one seems able to stay there long.

My partner and I had moved into rented accommodation in Kirton-in-Lindsey, Lincolnshire. We ended up renting and moving into a modern semi-detached house in 2007.  We were informed the house had been built in the last 18 months. My partner and I are both professional people and have full time jobs.  We are not the type to believe in ghosts, supernatural etc. and have often scoffed at those who do.

Everything was ok with the house (it wasn’t our first choice but was alright for an interim measure) for about a month.  Then when sitting downstairs we starting noticing the sound of someone walking across the floor above us.  We also heard other sounds like a window opening.  Now normally we would have put these sounds down to general creaking but this was a new house and the floors upstairs were chipboard flooring and the windows were modern and had locks.  We did go to investigate but of course found nothing.  After a while we started to get used to them and simply ignored the sounds.

Then one night (about 10.30pm) I was watching television and saw 2 figures in the corner of the room. One was standing and the other sitting down.  I wasn’t frightened but there was no ‘bad’ presence around the figures.  When I blinked, they vanished.  I never saw those figures again.

After that things became more sinister.  I woke one night to see a tall man in black at the end of my bed. This was a frightening sight and I woke my partner.  We turned on the light but the man vanished.  I put this down to a nightmare at the time but saw this figure on another occasion.

During the night, I daren’t go outside the bedroom door and if I needed the loo (luckily we had an en suite) I would run back to bed.

This progressed to feeling scared about also going upstairs during the day.  Although there was no drop in temperature it just felt as though there was some kind of presence there.

We moved out of that house after 10 months and bought a house in the village.  I had spent most of my childhood in a Georgian house but never experienced any strange atmosphere or seen figures before.  In fact, I didn’t believe in ghosts etc as I thought they were the results of an overactive imagination or too much drink.  The really strange thing is that it was a new house but we both felt the sinister presence.

I believe the people who moved in after us didn’t stop long either and the house is up for rent once again.

  1. This has all the signs of a recording play back. It would be interesting to go into the records to see if the land was once used for dwellings. My theory is, recordings in time work like a video tape, and deteriorate much in the same way. At first you will get full sound and solid visual images. As the year go by the visual fades and becomes semi-transparent; then all colour is lost and you see grey or white. After more time all visual is gone and you are left with sound. Recordings do not interact with you, but if you do get interaction, then it’s spirit based.
    Hope that helps.

  2. If this is a new house, as you say. And no one has died there during its existance then there are two possibilities:
    1. The haunting is residual and there was a previous house on the property.
    2. The spirits are bound to some item of furniture (what we in the States call “used furniture” this can include just about anything up to and including statues, sofas, beds…you name it. But it would be some piece of property with special significance to its deceased owner (or owners). If that is the case DON’T give it to some “haunted collector” especially as it might be worth a great deal of money…but see my blog on that https://cassofgod.wordpress.com/2011/06/16/if-you-havent-seen-the-haunted-collector/
There are better ways of handling that.

In this case it is most likely that there was a house or hotel or something on the property before this present house.
What everyone needs to understand about ghosts (this includes poltergeists) is that they are trying desperately to be noticed by the living. Not for any sinister reason usually. With ghosts they quite often don;’t even realize they are not dead and they cannot understand why you ignore them. The best thing to do is sit down in a room (one where most of the incidents have taken place) and explain to the spirits in a friendly voice that they have “passed on” and, although you can occasionally see and hear them you can’t do it very well. Then tell them they are welcome to remain until they are ready to move on…to go “into the light” as we say but that you’d appreciate it if they would not frighten you so much. Then make it a habit to talk to them a while each day while doing necessary chores around the house. Telling them the local gossip and what’s going on in your life and so on. Make them feel like part of the family, so to speak.
You’ll soon find your fear has melted away and you’ll stop being prejudiced against these people just because they no longer have bodies.

Hi is the house still empty if so are you willing to give out the address as live in Scunthorpe and we are a team of four who go out to hauted locations to investigate and see if wev can pick up any paranormal activies. Thanks MArtyn Raynes

Hi Martyn. I don’t know the address personally. I’m sure the writer of the article would agree with me that it would be unfair to give away the address to a third party – we might even get sued if it turned out to be rented accommodation. My apologies.
